The Project

GUM commissioned this cover after seeing an animation built from a personal drawing — me and my brother hugging. That drawing became the conceptual seed: two people so intertwined their forms begin to merge. For FUSE — a theme about connection and spring — the goal was to translate that personal intimacy into bold editorial print. The 3D abstract forms are those two figures, rendered slick and structural: stacked, wrapped, fusing.

About GUM

Glasgow University Magazine is Scotland’s oldest continuously published student magazine, founded in 1889. Notable alumni include John Buchan. The FUSE edition was selected by Dazed & Confused as one of five student magazines to watch.

Reflection

What I Learned

FUSE was the project that proved 3D skills translate directly into editorial work, and that the translation is not a compromise. The cover works because the render was designed for print from the start, not adapted to it afterward. Thinking about the composition as a page spread, with the type as structural anchors and the 3D forms as the central image, meant every decision in the render served the final printed object. The warm gradient, the scale of the GUM logotype, the way the abstract forms are lit: all of it was calibrated to what reads at A4 on newsprint, not what reads on a monitor at 100%. Being recognised by Dazed & Confused as one of five student magazines to watch confirmed that the editorial direction landed. GUM FUSE cover, 2024. Cover Design, Glasgow University Magazine.
